SUSSEX DESIGN EXCELLENCE COMPETITION

The key objectives of our response were to; • Develop the proposal to be a contributory feature to the existing streetscape; Increase solar access and amenity beyond the capacity of the Stage 01 proposal by others; • Create a catalogue of public, communal and private spaces that contribute positively to the public domain within the urban context including opportunities for social interaction that share equitable, dignified, and safe access; • Embrace the density of the masterplan and its context and provide a proposal that exceeded the target yield for the project within the allowable gross floor area; • Prioritise residential amenity Our response involved a dynamic twisting form which utilised all of the available sunlight to dramatically increase the percentage of dwellings achieving solar access compliance. The massing of the building followed a tradition of ‘base middle and top’ each component respectively representing commercial, hotel and residential.
